The American child today or the TV child is
brought up in a world of scanning rather than
looking, of total involvement in audile-tactile
experiences which appeal to all of his senses. This
kind of total involvement of his whole sensorium is
in complete contrast to the specialist training of
the literate schoolroom. But the TV child of North
America is being brought up by television imagery
in a world of outlines that are flat and audile-
tactile.
“The Electronic Media: An Address by Marshall
McLuhan,”, Montreux, Switzerland,” The Television
Image , April 5, 1973, CBC Television.
